Talking in Parenthesis

Ramblings and angst from a mostly stay at home mom

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us. It is in everyone. And as we let our light shine, we give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others. -Nelson Mandela

Three Things Thursday

Since school started this week I was thinking about some of my past teachers...

1. Mr Shields~ he was my first grade teacher and gave me my love of learning. Everyday was exciting and he never talked down to us. He looked a little like John Travolta from Welcome Back Kotter. Exact same hair and he wore fry boots. The next year after I had him he was named teacher of the year. He died when I was in high school, way too young...

2. Mr Schmidt~ he was my sixth grade teacher. Sort of like Mr Shields, in fact they were very close friends. He allowed me to be me. Something I was having a very hard time with. He was cool and hip, wore those knit ties in pastels. Hey that was cool them, stop laughing!

3. Mrs. Starkey~ she was my creative writing teacher in high school. She was and still is an amazing person with the most gentle soul. She imparted such great knowledge to us without us even realizing it. Her classroom was a safe place. She taught from a funky rocking chair, and wore the greatest pattern ankle socks with her heels. I never think of her without smiling.

and a bonus

Ms Fite~ she was my honors biology and biology II teacher in high school. She knew her stuff and we all came out knowing our stuff too. Although I will always carry scars from the yeast lab, I got more out of that than I realized then. She had the greatest sense of humor too, and she always wore earrings that matched our units at the time. Sort of freaked the underclassmen out.
